Hospitality, tourism and trade industries constantly need people to work. The type of work you can get is of course determined to a large degree by your English skills. However, if initially your English is not very good but good enough to communicate with people, you shouldn’t take too long to find satisfactory employment, especially if you want to work in sales, restaurants, hotels (hospitality) or other services (for example cleaning). If you communicate well in English you can count on finding work in such occupations as: kitchen hand, office cleaner, hotel employee, domestic help (cleaner), supermarket hostess, bank teller, newspaper or shop deliverer (you will need a driving licence with a clean record), supermarket shelf stacker (night work), gardener (including mowing lawns), carwash cleaner (with flexible working hours), construction worker and painter (very popular and well paid).
 
 
Legal work for students. Every international student arriving in Australia is given the opportunity to work legally. Permission to work is part of the student visa for anyone who chooses to study in Australia for more than 12 weeks. Students can start work on the first day of commencement their course. There is a limit of 20 hours/week (part time) during any week when the course of study or training is in session. However, no work limits apply during recognised periods of vacation offered by your education provider (vacation, holidays). Keep in mid that each educational stay in Australia that lasts 3 months or more entitles you to one additional month after completion of your course and a course that lasts more than one year will entitle you to two additional months. During the additional month/s you may work full time. A perfect solution for students who want to extend their stay with full time work permission are packets of two courses. A break between those two courses can last up to 8 weeks. The Australian government allows students to work full time during that time.
 
Better English - better job. Those with better English skills can apply for such positions as restaurant or pub waiters/waitresses (always readily available and usually well paid), chef or chef´s assistant, pizza and take away food deliverer (driving licence required), nanny or demi-pair (with the chance to live with the family) or caregiver for elderly. You can also work in an office, at a reception desk (with the additional benefit of being quickly promoted), in supermarkets, clothing shops and electronic and service outlets. There is also a possibility to work in your own profession or even start up your own business.

What is the salary for a part-time student? The average salary for a part-time student ranges between 15 and 25 AUD per hour. Some places will offer you as little as $13. The usual rate is around 15-17 AUD per hour. If you have relevant work experience and a good skill, you can make as much as $20-$25 or in some cases even more. Waiters and waitresses additionally get tips from satisfied clients. Daily, this may add up to additional $20 in a restaurant or $10 in a café. Night shifts are paid even 50% more. If you work on a bank or public holiday you might be eligible to receive an enhanced pay rate up to 150%. The compensation payments schedule is either weekly or fortnightly.
